TIP #1: Longshot Overlays

They cure a multitude of ills...

There are lots of ways to use Slew's information. Here is one of my favorites: Longshot Overlays!

I usually look for a longshot single entry that is overlooked by the betting public, so the odds are completely out of line with the morning line odds (or your own line if you make one). These horses can produce wonderful opportunities. For those who are not familiar with the term, an overlay is a betting interest where the win odds are out of line with resonable win odds for the entrant. A 10-1 M/L bet up to 13-1 is not considered an overlay. But if it is ignored by the public to the tune of 30-1, consideration is a good idea.

Now an overlay need not be a "longshot". A 3-5 M/L at 6-1 could very well be a wonderful overlay if the 3-5 odds were considered realistic. But you best have a good idea of the opportunity the horse presents. Three recent examples follow. Click the link to see the actual results for each example, and compare the payoffs with the M/L:

1. Applicator in race 4 at Gulfstream Park on 05-28.
2. Chris and Dave at Santa Anita on 05-26.
3. Trace Creek at Arlington on 05-21.

I will often go through Slew's listings and note those longshots that might apply, set my phone to warn me 15 mins before each post time and check the odds for each horse as the post time approaches. It's a bit of work, but can be worth it. All you need is one or two a season!

POSTSCRIPT: As if on cue, the day after I posted this "tip", a very rare event took place at Santa Anita when bridge jumpers flooded the pools betting Rare Candy (5/29- R3) down to 2/5 with the "other" Slew horse, Prince of Arabia, being bet up from the 6-1 ML to 13-1 in the WIN POOL. An overlay created by the bridge jumping public, especially when the place and show payoffs would be bloated by the unusual betting activity if Rare Candy ran off the board.

WELL: Prince of Arabia placed 2nd with the 2/5 favorite running off the board, creating two wonderful payouts.Hope you had them!

And as always...good luck and good 'capping!
